Lucky: Mi Amiga y Yo

My little buddy, Ms. Lucky: Intelligent, wonderful, affectionate, sociable, and always good company.

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to write about Lucky, but after watching her today, I figured I should get some of this down for the record. We’ve been chumps for a long time now, so she’s not exactly "new" to the scene, but she still manages to keep things lively around here.

The Basics

For anyone reading this later: Lucky is an African Grey. If you know the species, you know they’re basically toddlers with wings and bolt cutters for faces. She’s settled into life here in North America perfectly, going from a quiet bird to a total social butterfly. She’s usually the first one to greet anyone coming through the door.

The Brain Games

The coolest thing about her is definitely the head on her shoulders. She doesn’t just "play" with toys; she figures them out.

Legos: She actually stacks them. Seeing a bird build a tower is one of those things that never really gets old.

Checkers: We’ve spent plenty of time over a board. She gets the gist of it, which is more than I can say for some people.

Puzzles: If there’s a way to take something apart or solve a logic problem, she’s on it.

Daily Life & Quirks

She’s got a personality that’s way bigger than her actual size. A few things I want to remember:

The Pranks: She is legitimately mischievous. She’ll set people up for practical jokes and then just watch the fallout.

The Music: The girl has range. One minute we’re listening to a full symphony, and she’s bobbing along like a conductor; the next, it’s a pop song, and she’s still keeping the beat.

Snack Time: Sunflower seeds are her absolute kryptonite. It’s the one time she’s actually quiet, just perched on her branch, happily crunching away.

The Sweet Side: For all her "prodigy" attitude, she’s a softie. She’s big on cuddles and will give "kisses" when she’s in a good mood.

Final Thoughts

It’s just easy having her around. She’s smart, she’s funny, and she’s got a huge heart. Whether she’s plotting a "jailbreak" or just hanging out on my shoulder, she’s been a great buddy to have through the years.
